PRIMARY AND INTERMEDIATE

TOPEC programs for primary and intermediate schools are built upon the solid foundation of the New Zealand Curriculum. Our programs are designed to foster physical wellness and health and provide a wonderful and enriching learning experience through the great outdoors. All subjects come to life with the natural environment serving as the perfect classroom.

River Safe Education Programme (1-day)

​

Making safe decisions in and around water.

 

Classroom/river walk session - Acknowledging different experiences around water and feeling safe/scared, and how to deal with these feelings. Learning how to successfully prepare for a safe trip to the river.

 

Practical session - learning self-rescue skills, river hydraulics, gaining confidence swimming in a river with appropriate gear, equipment and supervision. Experience using different craft - river bugs, duckies and rafts.

Bush Safe Education (1/2-1 day)

​

Preparing to safely go into the bush.

 

Learning what to take, how to tramp safely as a group, how to avoid getting lost in the bush and what to do if rescue is required.

 

Also basic bushcraft skills for a successful trip into the bush such as navigation, shelter and fire building.

Primary Residential Camp (Year 5/6)

(2-3 Days)

​

Tailored programmes offering a rotation of onsite activities. A chance to have fun and be challenged in the outdoors. 

 

Available activities include river safe, bush safe, flying kiwi, rock climbing, rogaining, low ropes and more. 

Basic offsite activities such as a mountain walk can also be considered.

Intermediate (Year 7/8) (<4 days)


Experiential, leadership focused or team building camps available. Incorporating River Safe and Bush Safe at a higher level with activities in and around TOPEC and on Taranaki Maunga.

Bryce Jourdain Scholarship (Year 8)

​

The purpose of the Bryce Jourdain Scholarship is to provide an opportunity for 10 students to participate in a programme of self-discovery and personal development. They will experience the outdoor environment and awaken their potential through a tailored leadership and personal development programme. Notification of applications for the scholarship will be sent to schools early term 3 each year.
