With accommodation in cabins for up to 100, separate staff/leader quarters, a large kitchen and main lodge. TOPEC caters for large and small school groups as well as corporate team building. The environmentally sustainable Eco Lodge offers an off-the-grid accommodation option available for hire through BachBreak. Two classrooms (plus the great outdoors classroom) complete the set-up, making TOPEC an outdoor centre of education and recreation excellence.

Eco Leadership Lodge

 

A high spec accommodation block – sleeping up to 11 adults based on sustainability principles. The main two-storey structure utilises recycled shipping containers that have been refurbished and adapted to provide a contemporary, functional, cosy and environmentally friendly accommodation area. Lighting is provided by solar energy, construction and cabinetry materials have been recycled where possible, rainwater tank and hot water by LPG.

The central area is a great place to unwind at the end of a long day or can be used as an area for presentations. Kitchenette with fridge, microwave, cooktop and zip. Two wheelchair access bathrooms, both with showers. One double bunk room with single bunk above on ground level and four single bunk rooms upstairs.

Cabins

  • 12 six and eight single bunk cabins; TOPEC can sleep up to 80 people in one large or two small residential camps.

Climbing - Abseiling - Bouldering Walls

Natural High Ropes Course

  • Situated in a stand of Totara trees onsite

  • Purpose built facility

  • The high ropes course consists of a flying kiwi, high traverse challenges and dangling duo

Low Ropes Course

  • The low ropes course consists of circuits and separate elements

  • Ideal for any age

  • Encourages communication and teamwork

  • Available to hire for visiting groups with TOPEC instructor

Tail Race

  • Controlled, artificial streamway from power station

  • 200m long, grade 2 rapids

  • Easy access onto the Waiwhakaiho River

  • Large eddy to practice kayak rolling or for flat water/slow moving water group sessions

  • Excellent venue for river safety education

  • Great for introduction to rafting

Waiwhakaiho River

  • The Waiwhakaiho River borders the TOPEC campus

  • A grade 2/3 section of white water running from TOPEC, through New Plymouth to the sea

  • Ideal for coaching all kinds of paddle skills - kayaking, rafting, bugging

Meeting of the Waters (Swimming Hole)

  • Swimming hole on the Waiwhakaiho River where the tail race meets the river, just a short walk from the TOPEC campus

  • A great way to end a hot day of activities

Burgess Park / Araheke Scenic Reserve

  • Acres of dense, beautiful bush right on our doorstep

  • Packed with paths, a swing bridge and scenic walks through native forest

  • Extensive predator control in operation

  • Several permanent orienteering courses

  • Site of natural, cultural and historic interest

  • Ideal for team development exercises, bushcraft and navigation skills teaching

  • Location for the infamous Mud Run!!!
